History of Buccellati Engagement Ring, Earrings, Bracelet, Necklace, Watch & Other Jewelry Designs

You may be familiar with the unique and ornate style of Buccellati jewelry. This Italian designer learned to carve and create some of the most beautifully textured pieces of all time. To give a brief history of this amazing jewelry designer, Brigitte Kruse & GWS Auctions is here to talk about how his designs came to be and some of the marvelous works he has created.

Buccellati Known for Textured Jewelry Pieces

The beginning of the Buccellati history starts in the mid-eighteenth century when Contardo Buccellati was working as a goldsmith in Milan. By 1903, Mario Buccellati was working as an apprentice at Beltrami & Beltrami, one of the most prestigious firms in Milan. He would later take over the firm in 1919 and change the name to his own. With the use of several metals including gold, silver and platinum, Buccellati created some of the most textural, unique pieces the world had ever seen.

Mario Buccellati; ”I am Not a Tradesman”

One of the singular, most infamous stories about Buccellati’s rise to fame would be as he threw a woman’s compact out the window proclaiming not to be “a tradesman” only giving people more curiosity as to what this unknown jewelry designer had to offer. The day after the incident, hundreds of people showed up to his booth to see what his designs were all about and he ended up selling his entire stock.

First Italian Jewelry Designer in NYC

In 1951, Buccellati became the first Italian designer in NYC with a location on the famous Fifth Avenue. He already had stores open in Rome, Florence and Italy. The firm continues to be an internationally known company and is run by the third generation today.

Buccellati Takes the Spotlight Between 1920-1960

For four decades, Buccellati’s main accomplishments stole the hearts of many. There is nothing like the texture and quality of these pieces. Many of the textures mimic materials like fabrics, leaves, lace or honeycomb. If you find pieces that have gemstones used in them, they are cut in unique patterns as well.

Buccellati Quality Continues Today

The precise way in which metals and jewelry is carved, continues on today. Each piece is handcrafted and made with love and patience. The unique way in which these pieces are crafted continue to be a representation of their work even today. The firm continues to expand its international presence and is growing every day.
