From Humble Beginnings, an Empire is Born

From a small workshop on Santa Isabel Street in Madrid, one of the most luxurious jewelry companies was born. Saturio Esteban Carrera, a young man who immigrated to Madrid to establish a small jewelry business. From his small and simple workshop, Saturio never imagined that his legacy would become one of the leading fine jewelry companies worldwide, and a pillar for the Spanish jewelry industry. Passing on the tradition, his son José Esteban Carrera learned the jewelry trade in Paris. Upon his return, he decided to continue the family tradition and opened a workshop on Santa Isabel Street in Madrid. Having no sons, he taught his trade to his nephews. Together, they created an empire from some of the smallest beginnings.

Prestigious Commission Puts Them on the Map

In 1960, Carrera y Carrera was commissioned to create the tiara worn by Queen Fabiola of Belgium for her royal wedding. This was a game changer for the company. They were internationally recognized for their luxury jewelry.

Carrera y Carrera Expand to the U.S.

In 1979, reached an international milestone when it came to the U.S. The Cellini boutique located in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City began selling the jewelry and to this day, their exquisite pieces are available in this boutique. In the 1980s, Carrera y Carrera gifted Ronald Reagan with a sculpture that is still found in the White House Museum today.

In the 1990s Carrera y Carrera became a favorite among the aristocracy, the upper middle class, celebrities and royalty all over the world. Her Majesty Queen Sofía, a great admirer of the brand, become in 1992 the godmother of a spectacular piece created by Manuel Carrera and the artisan goldsmiths of Carrera y Carrera – El Arca del Descrubimiento del Quinto Centenario. (“The Ark of Discovery of the Fifth Centennial”).

In 2002 the sculpture El sueño de Ícaro (“Icarus’ Dream”), a spectacular piece belonging to the company’s private collection, was exhibited in the most important jewelry museum in the world, the Armory Museum in the Kremlin.
